NOW Foods Rawsome uses organic sourced nutrients to provide high-value nutrition in a small serving size, without unwanted chemicals and additives. Here are the 3 food techniques that are the backbone of providing RAWSOME with its amazing nutritional value.
Sprouted Grains
Sprouting, also known as germination helps concentrate nutrient levels, break down hard-to-digest food components to aid digestibility, and increases probiotics and antioxidant levels in seedlings. Sprouting turns some super foods into LIVE SUPER foods, where vitamin and mineral levels can increase up to 30 times. Increases in beneficial fibre and protein content are also seen, while both are converted into easier-to-digest forms. The proliferation of antioxidants and probiotics help protect the germinating seed, and provide wonderful nutritional benefits for humans. Seeds retain their nutritional value longer as the occurrence of rancidity is reduced. Sprouted grains are used in Rawsome to help build its overall nutrient value.
SmartGrain
Because of the extremely high oil content in flaxseed, stability and rancidity are common concerns. Sprouting flaxseed increases the vitamin (200-400%) and mineral content. These are powerful antioxidants that protect the polyunsaturated fats from oxidation, naturally stabilizing the essential fatty acids. SmartGrain Flax is created through a patented farming technique called ingraining. Based on the traditional and present organic farm practice of using fish meal to fertilize foods, Rawsome incorporates this natural process to both stabilize and fortify our product. Through the use of a process described as ingraining, Smartgrain provides a unique solution to the challenges of oxidative rancidity specific to the unstable chemical structure of the essential OMEGA 3 fatty acids, ALA, DHA, EPA. Ingraining is achieved through various stages of the germination process, whereby the seed metabolizes the DHA and EPA from a marine source (fish oil) to become included in the cellular matrix of the seed.

Ingraining is much different than current methods of spraying or mixing fish oil onto the surface of the food or seed particle or into a finished product. Through ingraining, the DHA and EPA from marine source now have become part of the seed and plant metabolism. This receptive internalization of DHA/EPA is the key to its oxidative stability. In fact, if the seed is further developed into a leaf bearing plant, lipid analysis confirms the presence of DHA/EPA in the living plant tissue. This demonstrates for the first time the presence of DHA/EPA in the chemical structure of a living terrestrial plant. Complete OMEGA 3 in SmartGrain flax is stable for up to 18 months based on anisidine and peroxide values.

10 Health Benefits of Bee Pollen

What are Bee Pollen Granules?

In addition to being pollinators, honey bees collect the microscopic pollen dust released by flowers. They compact this pollen into granules, resulting in one of nature’s most completely nourishing foods. Bee pollen is almost 40% protein, half of which is in the form of free amino acids, ready to be used immediately by the body. In addition it contains almost all nutrients required by humans.

10 Reasons to Add Bee Pollen to your Diet

  1. Energy Booster– Because bee pollen is full of almost every nutrient required by humans, it’s a great energy booster! The carbohydrates and protein especially can help fight fatigue and increase your stamina.
  2. Skin Soother– Not just for ingesting, bee pollen can be used topically. It treats inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. It’s full of vitamins and amino acids that help to protect the skin and help regenerate cells.
  3. Respiratory Disorders– Bee pollen is full of antioxidants, which contain anti-inflammatory properties. This may help inflammation of the lungs, preventing asthma attacks.
  4. Allergy Treatment– Allergic symptoms are caused by the release of histamine, a compound found in almost all body tissues. Bee pollen can actually reduce the presence of histamine, reducing or preventing allergy symptoms.
  5. Digestive System– Enzymes are essential for breaking down the food we consume into forms that our body can use and extract nutrients from. Bee pollen contains over 5,000 enzymes, so it’s obvious that it aids in digestion!
  6. Boost your Immune System– According to Dr. Mercola, bee pollen has antibiotic-type properties that may be able to fight off viruses. In addition, as we mentioned above, it’s full of antioxidants!
  7. Suppress Cravings– Whether you’re getting over addiction or those late-night junk food cravings, bee pollen may help. Its high nutrient content may solve nutrient-deficiencies you didn’t even know you had, therefore eliminating cravings. It also contains phenylalanine, a natural amino acid, which acts as an appetite suppressant.
  8. Cardiovascular Support– Rutin is a flavanoid compound that boasts anti-clotting properties that could help prevent heart attack and stroke. Good news, bee pollen contains large amounts of the stuff. It could also help correct cholesterol levels and assist with other circulatory problems.
  9. Prostate Health– We already discussed some of the anti-inflammatory properties of bee pollen, so it’s no wonder that it aids those who suffer from benign prostate hyperplasia. By reducing inflammation of the prostate it can also resolve issues with urination.
  10. Fertility – Not only is bee pollen a hormonal booster and aphrodisiac, it can also stimulate and restore ovarian function, therefore aiding in pregnancy.

How to Consume

For better absorption, it is recommended that Bee Pollen is consumed with a meal. Start with a low dosage, such as 1 teaspoon, and gradually increase your dosage. Don’t consume more than 3 tablespoons a day, unless directed otherwise.

mackellar

Edamame is considered one of the top ten “super foods” in the world, and we’re not surprised. Edamame, which is actually just a young soybean, is high in iron, protein, fibre and all of the essential amino acids. MacKellar’s edamame is special because it’s Canada’s first locally grown edamame. The majority of edamame consumed in North America is grown and processed in China. When you buy from MacKellar Farms you can be certain you’re getting the freshest, certified GMO-free edamame around, all while supporting a local farming family! You can find out more about MacKellar Farms here.

Here’s a simple, tasty and healthy Edamame recipe that is perfect as an afternoon snack, or a side with lunch or dinner.

Sesame Edamame

Ingredientsedamame
  • 3-4 cups (app. 1 lb) of MacKellar’s Edamame in Pod
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds
Directions

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add edamame and boil for about 6 minutes, until the beans are crisp and tender.

While the beans are boiling, mix the olive oil, sesame oil, ginger, garlic and salt together.

When the beans are done cooking, drain the water and run cold water over the beans to cool them down. Drain well and pat off excess moisture. Next toss them in the dressing and top with the sesame seeds.

Hint: If you’re new to edamame don’t eat the pod! Hold the pod by the stem and slide the beans out with your teeth before discarding.

Dr.Bronner's Castile Soap

Tuesday’s Ten: Ten Ways to Clean with Castile Soap

Tuesday's Ten Logo

Although it doesn’t feel like it, spring is indeed here! Soon it will be warm enough to go outside without worrying about whether or not you’ll freeze. In the mean time, start thinking about spring cleaning! Spring is a great time to get rid of things you never use, clothes you never wear and to give your house a deep clean.

We’ve put together a list of ways to clean using Castile soap. Castile soap comes in solid and liquid forms and is made with vegetable oils such as palm, coconut, hemp, jojoba, and olive. This type of soap is a great alternative to other store-bought cleaners because it doesn’t contain artificial foaming agents, harsh cleansers, or chemical anti-bacterial agents. Plus it’s biodegradable! These recipes contain ingredients you probably already have, are easy to make and are super effective at getting the job done, so crank some tunes and get cleaning!

1) Cleansing Scrub: Combine a few tablespoons of baking soda with a few squirts of castile soap, until the mixture reaches a paste-like consistency. Rub this paste on anything that needs to be scrubbed clean for an effective, non-abrasive cleanser.

2) Toilet Scrub: Combine a few tablespoons of baking soda with 1/4 cup of castile soap. This recipe is similar to the cleansing scrub, but should appear thinner. Pour into toilet and clean as usual.

3) Floor Cleaner: Fill your mop bucket with warm water and add a couple tablespoons of castile soap. The ratio should be roughly 40:1. Stir gently before cleaning floors. HINT: Add a couple drops of your favourite essential oil for a fresh, clean scent.

4) Laundry Detergent: No need to dilute, just add 1/4 to 1/3 cup of castile soap to your laundry, depending on the size. HINT: For an extra deep clean add a couple tablespoons of baking soda. For a fresh scent, add a couple drops of your favourite essential oil.

5) Window Cleaner: In a spray bottle, combine 2 drops of castile soap with 2 cups of water. Spray directly on windows or mirrors and clean as usual for a streak-free finish.

6) All-purpose Cleaner: Combine 1 teaspoon of castile soap and 2 cups of water, plus a couple drops of essential oil in a spray bottle. This cleaner can be used anywhere from the kitchen to the bathroom. HINT: Use tea tree oil as your essential oil to give this cleaner disinfecting qualities.

7) Counter Cleaner: Mix 1+1/2 cups of water, 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol and 1 teaspoon of castile soap in a spray bottle. Spray onto countertops and wipe clean.

8) Natural Pesticide: Add 1 tablespoon of peppermint-scented castile soap to 1/2 a gallon of water. Mix well and fill a spray bottle with the mixture. Spray directly onto plants to kill aphids and other pests. HINT: Can’t find peppermint-scented castile soap? Just add a couple drops of peppermint essential oil.

9) Wall Cleaner: Combine 1/8-1/4 cup of castile soap to a bucket of hot water. Dampen a microfiber clothe and use it to wipe down walls in order to remove dirty fingerprints, greasy spots, marks or grime.

10) Foaming Hand Soap: In a soap dispenser mix a couple cups of water with a couple tablespoons of castile soap. Shake to form foam and pump when washing hands. HINT: Try mixing in different essential oils to make a unique smelling hand soap.

Dr.Bronner's Castile Soap

If you’re inspired to get cleaning and are looking for a great Castile soap, we recommend Dr.Bronners. It comes in a variety of scents and is perfect for any one of these recipes. If you decide to give one of these recipes a try, or have been using Castile soap as a natural cleaning-alternative for a while, let us know!

Tuesday’s Ten – 10 Reasons to Use a Tongue Scraper

Tuesday's Ten Logo

You may have noticed a film on your tongue before and wondered what it was. Our digestive systems work hard to remove toxins from our body, but these toxins have to go somewhere. They are deposited onto the surface of the tongue as a film, which is where tongue scraping comes in. Tongue scraping, or cleaning, is an Ayurvedic ritual that involves removing food debris, bacteria, toxins, fungi and dead cells from the surface of the tongue by, you guessed it, scraping it off. Incorporating a tongue scraper into your morning and evening oral hygiene ritual can be incredibly beneficial to your health. Here are ten reasons to use a tongue scraper.

  1. Improves the Ability to Taste – By allowing a film of toxins to build up on your tongue, you are blocking your taste buds. This could result in false cravings because your body is unable to communicate with your brain what you’re ingesting. Removing this film allows your taste buds to be exposed, which will lead to a higher level of sensitivity. That way you can really experience the flavors of your food.
  2. Get To Know Your Body –  Did you know that the colour of the film of toxins on your tongue is an important indicator of the internal organ health? Chances are you aren’t looking at your tongue every day, but if you’re scraping it you will. Learn what the different colours mean and you’ll know what your body is trying to tell you.
  3. Massage Your Inner Organs –  In traditional Chinese medicine, practitioners believe that different areas of the tongue correlate to specific organ systems. By scraping the tongue you are stimulating the corresponding organs, similar to acupuncture.
  4. Feel Fresher –  We’re not saying you should ditch your toothbrush or your floss, but scraping your tongue is a whole new way to clean your mouth that will leave you feeling fresher and cleaner.
  5. Improves Gum Health – Plaque build-up, tooth decay and gum health are all related to the bacteria in our mouth. By removing the bad bacteria they all benefit.
  6. Reduces Tooth Decay
  7. Prevents Plaque
  8. Prevents Bad Breath – Most bad breath comes from bacteria located at the back of the tongue. A tongue scraper is more effective at removing bacteria from this area as many people find it hard to reach using a toothbrush.
  9. Improved Immune Health –  Your body fights hard to remove toxins from your system, so reward it by not letting them get reabsorbed. Your immune system will have time to fight off other bacteria and viruses when it doesn’t have to deal with toxins a second time.
  10. Improve Cardiovascular Health –  Some research suggests that there is a connection between oral health and the cardiovascular system. Some oral bacteria release toxins that could harm blood vessels or cause blood clots. In addition oral inflammation, sometimes caused by bacteria, could lead to increased inflammation throughout the body including the arteries. This inflammation increases the risk of a heart attack and stroke. Use a tongue scraper to get rid of the potentially harmful oral bacteria sitting on your tongue.

What do you think of tongue scraping? Are you going to give it a try? If you’re convinced that tongue scraping is for you stop by The Granary to pick up Dr. Tung’s Stainless Steel Tongue Scraper and start seeing what tongue scraping can do for your health.

Temples maple syrup

Maple Season

It’s finally here, well sort of.  Signs of spring have started to emerge from beneath the snow and ice and this past week marked the beginning of maple syrup season.  As the temperatures begin to rise above 0 during the day, the sweet stuff starts to flow.  Not only is maple syrup sweet but it comes with some health benefits too.

Pure maple syrup is a significant source of many nutrients. Maple syrup contains manganese, riboflavin, zinc, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. The key nutrients pure maple syrup contains are manganese and zinc. Zinc is an antioxidant which is also good for your heart, and manganese is linked to HDL, the “good” cholesterol. Both zinc and manganese are important for the body’s immune system.

For people who have diabetes, or anyone who likes to watch their sugar intake, pure maple syrup is a much better choice for a sweetener than sugar or honey. It is recommended to eat foods that have a rating of 55 or lower on the glycemic index. Pure maple syrup is rated at 54, while sugar is rated at 58, and honey at 57.

I am often asked about the benefits of certified organic maple syrup and the truth was I was not sure what the benefits were, so I did some digging. The fact is there is very little difference in the final product of syrup.  It still takes approximately 40L of sap to produce 1 L of syrup. The final sugar ratio is the same and there is no noticeable difference when it comes to taste.  The difference lies in the paper trail produced by the organic certification requirements. Organic certification requires the maple bush owners to adhere to strict standards regarding where the trees are tapped, how they are tapped, the species mix in the bush, fertilizers used, and how the bush is managed among other best practice requirments. Inspections, fees and large paper trails are required to maintain a certified organic bush.  Basically it is ensuring the good health of the bush and the trees for years to come.

I recently spoke with Temples Sugar Bush about their maple syrup operation.  They admit to following the organic practices and principles simply because it ensures the health of their bush and their business.  They are selective with how and where trees are tapped, they ensure a healthy species mix and only use organic fertilizers when required. Its just good businesses practice.  They do not however pay the hefty fees for certification or keep the extensive paper trail certification requires. At The Granary both organic and local are priorities, in the case of maple syrup we sell Temples as we feel they use best practices and produce a quality local product.

Make sure to join us and other businesses from March 28 – April 5 as we celebrate Taste of Maple in Carleton Place.  Check out our event calendar for all the details.

lactose_intolerant

Are You Lactose Intolerant?

Lactose intolerance affects many Canadians: It is a condition where people lack the enzyme (lactase) required to digest the sugars in milk (lactose). Typical symptoms include gas, bloating, abdominal paint and nausea after the consumption of dairy products. It can be a hereditary condition that typically begins in the teen years and worsens with time. Unlike a dairy allergy, people that are lactose intolerant do not have an immune response to the milk protein, but rather an inability to digest the sugars found in dairy products. Not being able to comfortably consume dairy products can be a stressful and inconvenient problem. Treatment options to date typical involve removing dairy from the diet, this can be a difficult task for some. As dairy is a source of calcium, protein and Vitamin D, one needs to be extremely vigilant to replace these nutrients in the diet to maintain health. In some cases, foods that have had lactose removed may be an alternative, but you will pay a premium price for these food items. The other option is supplementing with a lactase enzyme before the consumption of dairy. This can be an expensive option and because it must be taken immediately before dairy consumption, it is also inconvenient.

There is now a permanent solution called SULMEDOL by Now Foods. SULMEDOL® is a unique form of the mineral sulfur, called sublimed sulfur. Sublimed Sulfur (SULMEDOL®) is the first licensed natural health product (NHP) known to activate the lactase in your intestine and restore the ability to digest lactose. SULMEDOL® is patented and approved as a NHP for this condition in Canada, based on the research of Dr. Airudin Khan M.D. of London, Ontario.

So How Does it Work?
For lactose intolerant individuals, the amount of lactase production is either too low to adequately digest lactose or production has been completely turned off at the very base level of gene-expression in the cells that produce lactase. SULMEDOL® appears to have a dual action in the restoration of lactose tolerance.

1. SULMEDOL® provides elements that are necessary for normal genetic function and the reactivation of lactase production

2. Sulfur from SULMEDOL® is also involved in the synthesis of the amino acid, cysteine. Placement of cysteine at specific locations in the proteins that are used to make the enzyme lactase allows for the proper 3-dimensional structure of the enzyme to be created.

The advantage is that SULMEDOL restores the natural digestive process and activates the lactase enzyme in your small intestine and restores your ability to digest lactose, eliminating the need for lactose-free dairy products and lactose-digesting enzymes before each meal. This eliminates not only the inconvenience of carrying digestive enzymes with you everywhere you go, but also the stress of avoiding dairy products.

Most people experience permanent relief within 1-2 bottles

NOW® SULMEDOL® offers your real freedom from your lactose intolerance

Sleep – Are You Getting Enough?

Sleep is one of those universal subjects – we all need it, and at some point we all struggle with it. Sleep is one of the main topics of conversations with new parents and a constant battle for many. At first I was surprised with the number of people that are looking for natural solutions to their sleeping problems. Disturbed sleep can have many sources including hormonal changes, stress, medication side effects, shift work, children and even the dreaded “brain train” . There seems to be two main types of sleep issues, those who can’t get to sleep and those who can’t get back to sleep after waking up. Both issues, if left unmitigated, can lead to a variety of health issues that go beyond the tired brain fog that can follow you around all day. Lack of sleep over time with start to slower your metabolism, weaken your immune system, inhibit tissue repair and overall cause undue stress on the body and it’s systems.

When it comes to restoring restful sleep there are a number of options out there ranging from strong medications and antidepressants often issued by doctors to a wide variety of natural solutions and formulas. But before trying to find a magic pill, make sure you are practicing good sleeping habits.

* Try to stick to a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends
* Reduce or eliminate your screen time (TV, computer etc) an hour before bedtime
* Get a little exercise everyday, a brisk walk before bed can work wonders
* Don’t go to bed too full or too hungry, a small protein rich snack can help you sleep
* Create a room just for sleeping, comfortable and free of distractions and electronics
* Manage stress and reduce cortisol levels – journaling, yoga & meditation are useful tools

Even when the best sleep practices are in place sleep can still remain elusive and a little help is needed. As previously mentioned there are a wide variety of natural sleep remedies out there, many of which work for many people. One of our favourites at The Granary is Ortho-Sleep. Combining amino acids, herbs and stress reducing compounds, Ortho Sleep creates an effective product, proven to combat the effects on insomnia and restore sleep patterns.
