Shoyeido's blending process is an art form. Highly trained "masters" draw upon centuries-old secrets to create masterworks of fragrance. These artisans carefully process the quality, balance, and ratio of every hand-selected natural ingredient. The slightest variation in amount or quality of any component can dramatically influence the outcome. Only the finest raw materials are used. The results are remarkable, subtle scents that beckon us to use all of our senses — what the Japanese call mon-koh, or "listening to incense."

These unique blends are the modern natural solution for creating a relaxed atmosphere in the home. Clean and Green

With respect for the environment and a concern for green practices, Shoyeido continues to set the standard in the market of fragrance. They have procured permits from the Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry in Japan, and the US Fish & Wildlife Department to validate that their products are properly accounted for and responsibly harvested. None of the recipes contain animal ingredients and no testing has ever been done on animals.

Where is the Stick?

Unlike many incense, Shoyeido's blending techniques do not require a bamboo core. With Shoyeido, the fragrance you enjoy is that of pure incense rather than the smoke of a superfluous wooden base. Shoyeido blends only the finest natural ingredients and binds them with Tabu-koh (machilus thunbergii) and water. This mixture is then extruded, much like spaghetti, and allowed to dry as a solid stick of pure incense.

These beautiful handwoven African baskets are made by artisans in Ghana. Artisans are paid fair market prices for their products to ensure they earn a living wage for their talents and time. This has had a positive impact not just on the craftspeople, but on the entire community, allowing it to sustain its traditions while creating new sources of economic growth. In addition many initiatives in the area are supported where our weaving partners live including sanitation and education programs.

Available in large selection of sizes and colours these African baskets are not only functional but beautiful too and made to last a lifetime. From table top baskets to laundry baskets there is a multitude of uses for these unique hand made African Baskets. Available in both neutral and traditional colours you are sure to find one that suits your style and decor.

Prices range from $45 – $175 and reflect the skilled labour required to create a quality product that will last.

Where Are The Baskets Made?

The “Bolga” baskets are distinct to the area of Bolgatanga Ghana which is in the far north of the country. Initially it was developed bring an income to the region during the farming off season. These baskets have a distinct style, shape, and quality. Once you are familiar with a true Bolga basket, you can easily spot the difference in quality and construction between these and baskets from other parts of the world.

What Are They Made From?

The baskets are made of elephant grass, so-called because it grows so tall and strong in the region where these baskets are made. In fact, it was so abundant in the region of Bolgatanga that for many many years that it was considered a nuisance. Basket weaving evolved to make use of an overly abundant resource.

Basket making is an important traditional craft in the region and the weavers are predominantly, but not exclusively, women. The leather handles are sewn on by men who specialize in “leathering”. These handles are goat leather. In Ghana, many people own goats as a food staple so goat leather is abundant in the region. Goats are an integral part of the culture in Ghana. They are raised in a free range environment and no part of a dead animal is wasted.

Produced in their off the gird location, they have been producing their own electricity and heat for over 25 years directly form renewable resources. They recycle 100% of their water back to nature and strive to be waste free by only using items that can be recycled, reused or composted. Even their local delivery car is electric, powdered by Solar energy. I find all of that truly awesome, but maybe not as awesome as the coffee itself!

Twisted Sisters is grown in La Plata, Colombia between 1700 and 2000 meters. The crop comprises a mixture of Caturra and Castillo varietal beans, that we roast to a light City+ level. Bean Sourcing

Fluid Solar Roasted Coffee is roasted from only the best sustainably sourced beans from around the world. They are a socially responsible coffee purchaser that supports and purchase Fair Trade, Organic and Rain Forest Alliance certified coffees. They use a Direct Trade means of purchasing from these producer/partners and pay a minimum of 50% more than Fair Trade prices for the same product.

They also support the Las Marias coffee co-operative of La Plata, Colombia. This co-op was founded by farming women who where overwhelmed by the lack of credit available to them. By committing to purchase coffees from the Las Marias women, financial support became available, allowing the group to plant coffee trees and install equipment to improve their production processes, profitability and quality of life.

Roasting

How a coffee is roasted has a lot to do with the quality of the final cup.

Have you ever had a coffee leave you with a sour stomach and an unpleasant jittery feeling, or one that tastes burnt and bitter? You would probably assume the problem is poor quality coffee beans, but in many cases, the roasting equipment is the real culprit.

The vast majority of coffee roasters, small and large, typically use drum-style roasting machines. Many of these machines trap smoke from the roasting process inside the drum, transferring the smoke flavour to the coffee beans.

Additionally, food chemist Michael Sivetz discovered that drum roasters have very little oxygen present during the roasting cycle. This leads to the development of bitter tasting acids due to an effect known as pyrolysis.

Sivetz went on to design and patent a coffee roaster based on the fluid bed principal which is commonly used in industrial applications, including coal-fired power plants and food drying.

The fluid bed process adapted to coffee roasting uses large volumes of heated (oxygenated) air to lift and heat the coffee slowly and evenly. (Think hot-air popcorn popper on a large scale). High oxygen levels and slow, even roasting ensure the coffee oils do not pyrolyze, which is the process that creates bitterness.
