Halloween is all about candy for children and for adults who have fond memories of trick-or-treating. However, most candy is loaded with genetically modified (GMO) ingredients. Here at The Granary, we are opposed to GMOs and advocate eating non-GMO food when ever possible. That can make it tricky when it comes to purchasing Halloween candy. The first step to avoiding GMOs is to know what ingredients indicate their presence.

According to the “Guide To a Non-GMO Halloween” developed jointly by Green Halloween and Non-GMO Project, there are a number of GMO ingredients in Halloween candy. This list includes:

  1. GMO corn derived ingredients (high fructose corn syrup, corn starch, modified corn starch, fructose, dextrose and glucose.)
  2. Sugar (from GMO sugar beets)
  3. Soy derived ingredients, (soy lecithin and soybean oil).
  4. Cottonseed oil,
  5. Canola oil

Ok. So you’ve done a little research and have decided that you no longer want to partake in handing this junk out. Now what? What can you hand out instead? For starters, you can look for products that are certified organic and/or are Non-GMO Project certified.

Here at the Granary you can purchase a great selection of Non-GMO suckers, candies & chocolates perfect for all the gouls. You can even skip the sugar laden candy and hand out kids favourites including stickers, tattoos, pencils.

Worried about the stuff your children bring home from their trick or treating adventures?  Maybe a visit from the sugar fairy is required. The sugar fairy descends upon your house after Halloween to collect candy for her babies. In return for your candy she leaves a toy or other wanted gift for your child. The more candy that is left, the better the prize!
