Mineral Sunscreen Vs Regular Sunscreen
There are a lot of sunscreen options on the market, but not all are created equal. Sunscreens are classified as being either physical or chemical. Chemical sunscreens “absorb” UV light, whereas physical (or “mineral”) sunscreens act more like a shield, creating a barrier between your skin and harmful UV rays. The other major difference is that mineral sunscreens are made using ingredients such as zinc oxide. In comparison, chemical sunscreens can contain harmful ingredients your body may absorb.
There are 16 active ingredients found in sunscreens, and in 2019, the FDA reported that only two of those ingredients are classified as being “generally recognized safe and effective” — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These are found in mineral sunscreens. It was also reported that the risks associated with select ingredients found in chemical sunscreens, such as Para-aminobenzoic (PABA) and trolamine salicylate, outweigh the benefits.
